THE ANTI OBESITY HORMONE

lrisin is an anti-obesity and anti-diabetes hormone recently discovered that regulates fat tissue and blood sugar. lrisin increases the metabolic rate that switches on the genes able to convert white fat into "good" brown fat. Brown fat (more about it below) is the fat that continues to burn calories past your actual aerobic workout. So, in case you were wondering or just wanted to win at your next family trivia ... there you have it.

BROWN FAT VS. WHITE FAT?

Brown fat is the fat that is metabolically active. We have brown fat in order to generate heat effectively. It is referred to as the "good" fat. Brown fat dramatically decreases with age. Adults with a greater percentage of brown fat tend to be leaner. We can stimulate brown fat production by exposing our bodies to cold temperatures, and by fasting and exercise.

White fat is our evolutionary calorie storage. It acts as a thermal insulator as well as a "cushion" if you know what I mean. It is harder to deplete, especially if it's the visceral kind which wraps around the inner organs and midsection.

ANOTHER REASON TO EMBRACE THE COLD

Exposure to cold temperatures can make your body burn off glucose very quickly as a way of warming up the body (this can accelerate the state of ketosis putting you in an enhanced fat burning zone). Any unused glucose will then be stored in your muscles as glycogen, providing you with more energy for all the activities you want to experience in life.

WINTER SUNSHINE LOTION

Winter is coming in the northern hemisphere, which means that our Vitamin D levels might need a little upkeep. Studies show that Vitamin D is important for many functions including weight-loss. Sun exposure is the best way to maintain adequate levels of this vitamin; ultraviolet rays trigger vitamin D synthesis in the skin.
